Leo Tolstoy — If you are in a difficult situation…

If you are in a difficult situation, a low mood, if you are afraid of other people and of yourself, if you are tormented, then tell yourself: “I will love everyone whom I meet in this life.” Try to follow this rule; and you will see that everything will find its way, and everything will seem simple, and you will no longer have doubts or fears.
Leo Tolstoy

Mother Teresa — True love hurts…

True love hurts. It always has to hurt. It must be painful to love someone, painful to leave them, you might have to die for them. When people marry they have to give up everything to love each other. The mother who gives birth to her child suffers much. It is the same for us in the religious life. To belong fully to God we have to give up everything . Only then can we truly love. The word “love” is so misunderstood and so misused.
Mother Teresa

Francis Schaeffer — Through the centuries…

Through the centuries men have displayed many different symbols to show that they are Christians. They have worn crosses in the lapels of their coats, hung chains about their necks, even had special haircuts. Of course, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with any of this, if one feels it is his calling. But there is a much better sign, a universal mark that is to last through all the ages of the church until Jesus comes back…Love- and the unity it attests to- is the mark Christ gave Christians to wear before the world. Only with this mark may the world know that Christians are indeed Christians and that Jesus was sent by the Father.
Francis Schaeffer

Mother Teresa — We all long for heaven where God is…

We all long for heaven where God is, but we have it in our power to be in heaven with Him right now- to be happy with Him at this very moment. But being happy with Him now means loving like He loves, helping like He helps, giving as He gives, serving as He serves, rescuing as He rescues, being with Him twenty-four hours a day- touching Him in His distressing disguise.
Mother Teresa

Unknown — It matters not how much Bible reading…

It matters not how much Bible reading and prayer and catechism saying and godly teaching there may be in a home, if gentleness is lacking; that is lacking which most of all the young need in the life of a home. A child must have love. Love is to its life what sunshine is to plants and flowers. No young life can ever grow to its best in a home without gentleness. The lack is one which leaves an irreparable hurt in the lives of children.

Oswald Chambers — God does not have to come and tell me…

God does not have to come and tell me what I must do for Him, He brings me into a relationship with Himself where I hear His call and understand what He wants me to do, and I do it out of sheer love to Him… When people say they have had a call to foreign service, or to any particular sphere of work, they mean that their relationship to God has enabled them to realize what they can do for God.
Oswald Chambers

Lisa Harper — Every single person in our lives…

Every single person in our lives will disappoint us at some level.  Some days they’ll be busy when we need them to be still; other days they’ll be self-centered when we need them to concentrate on us.  Sometimes they’ll bruise us with hard words aimed right for the soft places in our soul.  They won’t meet all our emotional needs.  They can’t; they have too many needs of their own.  They’re sinners just like us.  Only our Creator can love us perfectly, the way He created us to be loved.  His love is the only thing that can define us without destroying us.
Lisa Harper

Chip Ingram — The first command in Ephesians 5…

The first command in Ephesians 5 tells us to be imitators of God by reflecting the way he loves us.  Our love for others flows out of our sense of being deeply loved.  Instead of constantly looking for the right person, God tells us to become the right person.  Instead of looking for love, God tells us to realize that love has already found us!  God loves as no one else ever can.
Chip Ingram

Annie Johnson Flint — God has not promised skies always blue…

God has not promised skies always blue,
flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God has not promised sun without rain,
joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God has promised strength for the day,
rest for the labor, light for the way,
grace for the trials, help from above,
unfailing sympathy, undying love.
Annie Johnson Flint

Richard Baxter — Is it a small thing in your eyes to be loved by God…

Is it a small thing in your eyes to be loved by God- to be the son, the spouse, the love, the delight of the King of glory?  Christian, believe this, and think about it: you will be eternally embraced in the arms of the love which was from everlasting, and will extend to everlasting- of the love which brought the Son of God’s love from heaven to earth, from earth to the cross, from the cross to the grave, from the grave to glory- that love which was weary, hungry, tempted, scorned, scourged, buffered, spat upon, crucified, pierced- which fasted, prayed, taught, healed, wept, sweated, bled, died.  That love will eternally embrace you.
Richard Baxter

Amy Nappa — God might want you to extend his love…

God might want you to extend his love by offering to baby-sit for the single parent down the street. He might want you to prepare a hearty meal for that lonely old man who lost his wife — and to sit and visit with him while he eats. Who knows, he might even want you to reach out and touch the life of a total stranger in some way you can’t imagine right now. Are you willing to set aside your own comfort to touch someone else with God’s love?
Amy Nappa

Henri Nouwen — When you pray…

When you pray, you open yourself to the influence of the power which has revealed itself as love.  The power gives you freedom and independence.  Once touched by this power, you are no longer swayed back and forth by the countless opinions, ideas, and feelings which flow through you.  You have found a center for your life that gives you a creative distance so that everything you see, hear, and feel can be tested against the source.
Henri Nouwen

Dorothy Dupont — One day…

One day, a child of mine came home in tears. Another child had been mean to him and hurt his feelings. I want to say now, as I said then, “When a person doesn’t like you, or is mean to you, it has more to do with them than it does with you. Dry your tears. You cannot be loved by everyone, because everyone cannot love themselves. You can know that I will always love you. And the greatest gift you can give to others is to love yourself. If you do that, you can love others without worrying whether they love you back. You will have enough love for both of you.”
Dorothy Dupont
