Exodus: Lessons In Freedom

I'd like to invite you to join me for a free, video-based Bible study here on The Ranch website. It's called Exodus: Lessons In Freedom and the purpose is to help you to get free, stay free and set others free.

The beauty of this study is that you can be involved in this study as much or as little as you'd like. Every week for fifty weeks, I posted a new, half-hour video on The Ranch website that you can watch anytime on your own, or just read the transcript if you don't have the time or capability to watch the video.

The study itself grew out of my own personal quiet time with the Lord during the 40-day fast I undertook to pray about the next steps for my own ministry. During this extended time of prayer and fasting, I was reading the book of Exodus, trying to learn from God's interaction with Moses how He was able to free hundreds of thousands of people. Every day, God put a lesson on my heart that I could apply to my own situation. As I've put those lessons into practice over the past year, I've found that they worked for me just like they worked for Moses almost 3,000 years ago! God seems to have all the best ideas!

I love sharing with you what I've learned, as I believe these truths apply to anyone who wants to learn how to get free, stay free and set others free. Each half-hour video contains a practical lesson from God's Word, a time of worship, and a time of intimate discussions with others. I think you'll find it a fun time of study, fellowship and worship.

Like everything else on The Ranch website, there is no charge to you to watch the lessons or take part in the discussions. Each lesson stands on its own, so you don't have to watch every lesson to get something out of it (although I'd love for you to join us for the entire series).

You might want to watch the first lesson, which tells how we get into bondage in the first place, then hopefully you'll join us for the rest! You can take a look at the first lesson below.

Special Note

I'd also like to thank our local men's group, "Men @ The Ranch," for letting us film this study each week. Although we've filmed this in a men's group, the study itself is not specific to men-only, and we have several women who come regularly to help with the cameras, sound and transcripts who have thoroughly enjoyed the study and had their own discussion group after each lesson.

Special thanks to our guest worship leaders, Al Lowry and James Olmos of Saddleback Church in California, and Kurt Smith of Central Church in Streator, to Lisa Palm for transcribing each study, Dale and Judy Ralston for letting us film some lessons in their home, Central Church for hosting the study, and the following people who have graciously helped on and off camera: Dee, Bud, Scott, Dale, Paul, Rob, Dale, Jim, Rich, Ralph, Al, Tyson, Eric, Jim, Tim, Holly, Jessica and Penny!

Lesson 1 - The Fear Of Man Leads To Bondage
If we want to get free, it's helpful to know how we got in bondage in the first place. Lesson 1 exposes one of the core roots that cause bondage: the fear of man. When we're afraid of people, or they're afraid of us, the chains of bondage begin to tighten around us. Once we recognize the cause of bondage, we can begin to take steps towards true freedom. (Lesson from Exodus 1:1-14; Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Amazing Love" written by Billy Foote, led by Al Lowry and James Olmos; Running time: 28:36)
Lesson 2 - The Fear Of God Leads To Freedom
If the fear of man leads us into bondage, how do we get out? The fear of God. A healthy fear of God can break all kinds of bondage, setting us free to live the lives we were created to live. And when we're free, not only will we be blessed, but others will be blessed as we begin to do all the God has called us to do. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Holy And Anointed One" written by John Barnett, led by Al Lowry and James Olmos; Running time: 31:22)
Lesson 3 - A Burning Heart Precedes A Burning Bush
Sometimes we're looking for a burning bush, for God to speak to us and tell us what to do like He did for Moses. But God is looking for a burning heart: someone whose heart burns for the things for which His heart burns. If we want to see a burning bush, we need to let God see our burning heart. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Father, I Adore You" written by Terry Coelho, led by Eric Elder; Running time: 30:31)
Lesson 4 - God Rescues People Through People
If God wants to rescue people, why does He need us? We are His hands and feet on the earth, the "body of Christ." It may be His idea, and we couldn't do it without Him, but His idea also includes us. I'm sure He could do it without us, but I know it's a lot more fun to "step into the story." (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Here I Am To Worship" written by Chris Tomlin, led by Al Lowry and James Olmos; Running time: 30:29)
Lesson 5 - Letting God's Will Overcome Your Won't
When God calls us, we often protest, saying "Who am I?" The better question is "Whose am I?" When God calls us, He says "I will be with you" and that makes all the difference. We're in good hands with God when we forget about our weaknesses and remember His strengths. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever" written by Martin Smith, led by Al Lowry and James Olmos; Running time: 30:08)
Lesson 6 - The Battle Of Faith And Flesh
When we step out in faith, things don't always go the way we planned. But that doesn't mean God isn't with us. Knowing in advance that there will be two battles can help us. When this happens, we must "return to the Lord" in order to win the battle of faith first, then the battle of flesh will follow. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "I Walk By Faith" written by Chris Falson, led by Eric Elder; Running time: 30:21)
Lesson 7 - God Helps Us With Both Battles
We don't have to fight the battles of faith and flesh alone. When we "return to the Lord," He can help us fight the battle of faith, reminding us of His promises to us, and His call on our life. Then He can remind us that His arm is strong, and He will fight the battle of the flesh, too. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Forever" written by Chris Tomlin, led by Eric Elder; Running Time: 30:43)
Lesson 8 - God Sets People Free So All Will Know
Why does God set people free the way He does? Why did he harden Pharaoh's heart? Why not just set the people free and be done with it? Because He has another goal in mind beyond just setting people free: He wants to do it in a way that the world will know that He is the Lord. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "I Declare" written and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 30:41)
Lesson 9 - Ultimate Victory Comes Through Ultimate Sacrifice
If you want to get a little bit free, a little bit of sacrifice will do. But ultimate freedom requires ultimate sacrifice. In the case of the Israelites, the price for freedom was the death of the firstborn - the firstborn sons of their captors, and the firstborn males of their flocks. For us today, freedom comes at the price of God's Firstborn Son and Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. (Message: Eric Elder; Worship Song: "Lord, I Lift Your Name On High" written by Rick Founds and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 30:36)
Lesson 10 - God FulFills His Promises In A Way That Is Unforgettable
Sometimes it seems that God is slow in answering our prayers. But often He is waiting to answer our prayers in a way that is unforgettable. This message highlights the remarkable way He set the Israelites free, with the Passover meal that was so unforgettable it is still celebrated 3,500 years later. This special message also includes a time of personal communion for you and the Lord. (Message: Eric Elder; Communion Song: "Peace" written and played by Guy Grimstead; Running time: 41:59)
Lesson 11 - Mark The Date
Getting free is half the battle, staying free is the other half. One of the first steps of staying free is to "mark the date" of when we got free. Then we can regularly remind ourselves and others of the victory God has already brought us, which then helps us to trust Him again and again to keep us free, too. (Message: Eric Elder; Music: "Come, Now Is The Time To Worship" written by Brian Doerksen and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 24:49)
Lesson 12 - God's Route To The Promised Land Takes Time For Our Sake
God doesn't always lead us along the shortest path, but along the path that will help us stay faithful the longest. But even in the delay, He doesn't leave us alone; He contines to fulfill other promises as encouragement to us, and continues to clearly lead us and guide us. (Message: Eric Elder; Music: "Draw Me Close To You" written by Kelly Carpenter and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 31:30)
Lesson 13 - Stand Firm
One of the hardest things to do when facing an impossible situation is one of the best things to do: stand firm. God sometimes calls us to do nothing but "stand," and then we will see His deliverance. Even when others around us start to grumble, we can be strong, telling others "Do not be afraid, stand firm, and you will see the deliverance of the Lord." (Message: Eric Elder; Music: "I Stand In Awe" written by Mark Altrogge and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 23:43)
Lesson 14 - Take Action
There's a time to stand firm and a time to take action. When God commands it, taking action, even the simplest of actions like raising your arms, can split the sea in two. In this most spectacular display of God's power, God still enlists the arms of his servant Moses to bring it about. (Message: Eric Elder; Music: "Step By Step" written by David “Beaker” Strasser and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 33:35)
Lesson 15 - Take Time To Praise God
A great way to stay free is to take time to praise God for what He's done our lives. Whether we write our own songs, poems, or just sing to the Lord in our hearts about the things He has done for us, we can "refresh" the freedom He's already given us and it will give us the boost we need to go forward. (Message: Eric Elder; Music: "Blessed Be Your Name" written by Beth and Matt Redman and led by Eric Elder; Running time: 31:13)
